Lens material is often overlooked when purchasing eyewear. However, lens material can make a huge difference in the optics of vision and in the aesthetics of the eyewear. If you have a strong prescription, there have been major advancements in materials and manufacturing that can greatly minimize the thickness of your lenses. There have also been equal advancements in lens coatings that can increase scratch resistance and decrease distracting reflections. We work with many local labs and have full access to all of these advancements. For patient convenience, we also offer an onsite lab.
Many people don't realize that any ophthalmic frame can be made into prescription sunglasses. Likewise, many of your favorite designer sunglasses can be made with your prescription. There are many other sun options including transition lenses that turn from clear to dark, or clip-on sun lenses that match your frame shape. Different tints enhance your visual experience. The traditional gray tint gives the truest color rendition. Brown lenses are very popular for sporting applications where increased contrast recognition is needed. Yellow lenses serve a similar purpose but in lower light levels, like on a cloudy day. Polarized lenses are an absolute must for those that love the water or snow!
Not all our frames are for those with prescription. If you wear contacts, had LASIK, or are lucky enough to not need a prescription, we carry many brands of sunglasses including: Oakley, Arnette, Spy, Gucci, Juicy, and Dolce & Gabbana.

We carry all brands of contacts, including daily disposables, 2 week, monthly, quarterly, and yearly replacement lenses.
Many people with astigmatism have been told they were not candidates for soft contacts. There have been many advancements in toric soft contact lenses and many options now exist.
There has been a major advancement in soft contact lense material. These new lenses are made from silicon hydrogel, breathe between 3 to 7 times more than traditional soft contact lenses, and dry out significantly less! They are available in spherical, toric, and bifocal modalities, and some are approved for up to 30 days of continuous wear. Night and Day

Dr. James K. McPhelan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern California College of Optometry in 1976. The following year he found himself practicing in Arizona. In the 80's he opened the first 20/20 Eye Care office in Phoenix, and expanded that into 15 different locations. He subsequently sold those offices to get back into private practice and one-on- one patient care. In 1999 Dr. McPhelan took over Optical Illusions to provide an easy going and personalized atmosphere for eye examinations and eyewear sales.
Dr. Fuller received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Washington State University. Yes, he graduated Cum Laude, but he has to hear how Dr. McPhelan graduated Magna Cum Laude. He received his doctorate in optometry from The Ohio Sate University (Go Bucks!) in 1998. Trying to escape the gloom of Washington and Ohio he traveled to the Valley of the Sun in 1999. He worked for several valley optometrists, including a local LASIK center. Dr. Fuller joined Dr. McPhelan at Optical Illusions in 2000, and with the success of Optical Illusions, they opened their second location, Optique at the Ridge, in December of 2005.

Jessica started working as an optician in 1998 while attend- ing Arizona State University. By late 1999 she had enough of the commercial optical world and took a chance with the new partnership of Dr. McPhelan and Dr. Fuller who had just acquired a well established optometrist's office in Paradise Valley. She graduated in 2002 with a Business Management degree, and continued working at Optical Illusions where she assumed the office manager role in 2004. At the end of 2005, Jessica was moved up North to Desert Ridge to open and manage our brand new location. In her spare time, Jessica enjoys traveling, playing poker, and spending time with her husband Jay.
Kim started in the optical industry in 1990 working for a local commercial optical shop. She earned her Arizona Opticians license in 1992. By 1994 she had worked her way into man- agement, and in 1995 she moved to the Midwest where she gained her first experience with private practice optometry. After many life changes (marriage and a child), she made her way back to Arizona and returned to her previous employer as a store manager. In 2002, Kim was once again liberated from commercial practice when she joined the staff at Optical Illusions. In 2005 she became the office manager and hasn't looked back since!
Mavis got her start in the business with a large optical chain. Within 6 months she was promoted to assistant manager, and within another year she was a store general manager. While climbing up the corporate ladder she didn't let her dispensing skills wane. She received her American Board of Opticianry certification in 2003, her National Contact Lens Examiners certification in 2004, and to top it off she became an Arizona State Licensed Dispensing Optician in March of 2005. In April of 2005 she answered a higher calling and brought all her knowledge to the patients of Optical Illusions!
Juletta has been working in the optical field since 1997. Her first employer was a local private office in Mesa. Meanwhile, she attended Arizona State University where she received her Bachelor's degree in Business Management. In 2002 Juletta headed North to attend optometry school in Oregon, and after deciding she liked glasses more than eyeballs, she decided to return to her optician roots. She stayed in Oregon to manage a private office in the Portland area, but by April of 2006, she had her fill of rain and headed back South to work for us at Optique at the Ridge. She has been a board certified optician since 2005. When not at work, Juletta enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and working on her scrapbook.
Andrea is the most recent addition to our staff. She started working for a large national optical chain back in Kentucky four years ago. There she met her Arizona born husband who dragged her back to the Valley of the Sun. She was able to continue her employment with the same chain where she gained a strong background in customer service and valuable laboratory experience. Andrea is currently working toward her state optician license. In her spare time Andrea enjoys spending time with her husband and their golden retriever BoAnne.
